North Salem, NY — Sept. 13, 2020 — The final day of competition during the first week of the 2020 Old Salem Farm Fall Series kicked off in the Grand Prix Field with another win for Ireland’s Jordan Coyle and Picador. The highlight of the day was the morning’s $75,000 Old Salem Farm Grand Prix, presented by The Kincade Group, which Coyle took victory in over a field of 33. Junior and amateur jumper riders also took center stage on the Grand Prix Field for the $7,500 High Junior/ Amateur-Owner Classic.
Paul Jewell designed the main track contested on the Grand Prix Field. His first round consisted of 16 obstacles, to be cleared in a time of under 80.00 seconds. Of the starting line-up of 33 competitors, 10 entries left all fences intact within the time allowed and returned for the jump-off. Nicky Galligan (IRL), and his own Javas Miss Jordan, an Irish Sport Horse mare (Luidam x Alley Angel), managed the fastest jump-off time on 34.240 seconds but one downed rail kept them out of the winner’s circle. In an impressive feat, Friday’s $25,000 Grand Prix of North Salem winner and the winner of last week’s $75,000 SmartPak Grand Prix of Saugerties, Jordan Coyle again rose to the top of the podium with Picador.
Coyle and the impressive 13-year-old Anglo-European gelding (Lupicor x Kind Of Magic) have been unbeatable in their last several weeks of competition.
“We were both under pressure today, so I think we really felt the need to step it up and continue to perform at our absolute best,” he said.
“Picador is very highly strung, he really loves the show environment,” Coyle continued. “When you ride him at home, he’s like riding a school horse. But when you bring him to the show, he gets highly-strung. He is an unbelievable horse because he could honestly do this every day; there is no such thing as a day off or a schooling day in his mind.”
Winner earlier this week of the $3,000 1.40m Open Jumper Stake, Nayel Nassar (EGY), took the reserve honors on the podium with another Evergate Stables LLC entry, Oaks Redwood. He and the 14-year-old Warmblood gelding (ASB Conquistador x Oaks Miss Scarlett) left all rails standing with a time of 35.357. Veteran show jumping athlete Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) rounded out the top-three after clearing the timers in 35.573 seconds with Carlito’s Way 6 (Casall x Nicoletta I), owned by Artemis Equestrian Farm LLC.
Tori Corts and Bon Jovi Top $7,500 High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic
Wellington, Florida’s Tori Corts rode her own 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Bon Jovi(Verdi x Whoopy C), to the leading spot in Sunday’s $7,500 High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic. Out of an original 11 entries, Corts was one of only three riders to advance to Paul Jewell’s jump-off track. She and Bon Jovi led the field by over two seconds after clocking in at 32.722 seconds.
“This is only my fourth or fifth time competing in the High Amateur-Owner division so I’m very pleased with today’s results,” Corts said. “The course today was very nice and it was amazing to be back here. This is one of my favorite shows because everything is run so well.”
Jennifer Gates and her newly-acquired Darry Lou put in a solid effort to secure second place with a time of 34.991, while Kelly Tropin and Libertas Farm LLC’s Don’t Stop O were the final double-clear combination.
Ricardo Lopez Receives the Horse Show Hero Award,
presented by ShowAssist
Before the $7,500 High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, a special presentation was held. The Horse Show Hero Award, presented by ShowAssist, honors the hardest working people at the horse show. Throughout the week, people have nominated grooms, stall cleaners, bodyworkers, braiders, body clippers and other support staff as their horse show heroes, people whose hard work and dedication make the sport possible. The winner was selected at random from all the nominees. SweetWater Farm’s Ricardo Lopez, nominated by the farm’s owner, Jennifer Hinman received a $500 VISA gift card and prizes courtesy of ShowAssist, the app that connects professionals and owners with support staff at horse shows.
“Ricardo has been my groom for 15 years and without him, things just do not happen,” Hinman said. “He is the hardest working man. He is always the first one there and the last one to leave.”
“I have always worked with animals,” Lopez said. “When I came here I started working with the horses and I really just love them, they are amazing creatures.”
The Old Salem Farm Fall Series horse show will resume Wednesday, Sept. 16. The week will host a series of hunter, jumper and equitation classes including the NHS ASPCA Maclay Region 2 Championship on Saturday, Sept.19.
